On a mild February morning in 1997 Larry Eugene Phillips Jr. and Emil Decebal Matasareanu shocked the world with not only their brazen takeover bank robbery but with their willingness to engage in a furious prolonged firefight with responding police officers.
Beamed live across the United States and around the world, those who watched will forever remember the images of Larry Phillips striding around the parking lot of the Bank of America in North Hollywood, Los Angeles firing off hundreds of rounds from an illegally modified 'assault rifle'.
The police attempted to contain and neutralize the gunmen, but their weapons were next to useless against the clever distribution of body armour the gunmen had employed.
Before the day was over eleven police officers would be wounded, three seriously, along with six civillians.
The only fatalities were Phillips and Matasareanu.
